It has been known for a long time that patients with GERDS have an increased incidence of asthmatic bronchitis and pulmonary complications. However on March 24, 2000 it was posted on WebMD that in the March issue of American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine that the acidity in the breath during an acute asthmatic attack increases 1,000-fold. While the review poses the chicken or egg question, i.e. what happens first does the acidity increase cause the acute asthmatic attack (that would support our contention that reflux is a major cause of asthma) or that the asthmatic attack cause the increased acidity. |
