Discharge Diet

Lap Nissen Discharge Instructions - Discharge diet.

Follow a pureed diet until your follow up appointment with Dr. Gazayerli. At that time you can discuss advancing your diet. Do not drink any carbonated beverages, THAT CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS IN THE EARLY POSTOPERATIVE PERIOD. No extremely cold foods or beverages. No ice, ice cream, Popsicles, sherbet etc. Avoid gas forming foods such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and beans. Eat slowly and chew food well. If you have trouble swallowing liquids use a tablespoon to limit the amount swallowed at one time. Eat small amounts because you do not want to get too full and feel bloated. Do not use a straw this may cause gas and bloating.

Activity Recommendation:

No lifting over 10 pounds for 3 months and 20-30 pounds from 4th-6th month. No pushing or pulling. You may swim just use caution not to over exert. The purpose of limiting these physical activities is to avoid abdominal muscle strain that can cause recurrence. Avoid constipation to limit straining while using the bathroom. Do not drive for at least 48 hours after you are discharged to home. If you are taking pain medication do not drive the medication will make you drowsy. If you smoke you will swallow more air than nonsmokers. This will cause gas, bloating and fullness. Ideally you should try to stop smoking. But if you are unable to do so- use charcoal tablets after every cigarette to relieve the gas pains. Smoking also slows the healing process. Use the Spiro meter ( the blue bottle) several times an hour this will help prevent any post-op complications. You may experience pain or discomfort in you shoulders this is common, walking will help alleviate this and also help relieve the gas and bloating.

Wound care:

You may take a shower when you go home. Let the water run over the incisions then pat them dry, do not rub them. If you have steri-strips (the small white strips of tape) over your incisions leave them on and eventually they will fall off. If you have staples they will be removed at your appointment with Dr. Gazayerli. You may use band-aides over the incisions change them daily and as needed. Call Dr. Gazayerli should and of the following occur:

bulletFever over 100
bulletPain not relieved by your pain medication
bulletSwelling, redness, unusual drainage from your incisions
bulletNausea or vomiting

Post-operative bowel changes:

Constipation for a few days after surgery is very common. This results from less food intake and especially less fluids. Stool softners such as Colace or Surfak are very useful, together with bulk laxatives such as Metamucil. Adequate fluid intake is very important to prevent severe constipation.

Rarely diarrhea may develop post-operatively but it is usually self limiting and can also respond to increased fiber in the diet or bulk laxatives, that act in this instance to firm up the stools.

Medication:

Take antibiotics for full course prescribed. You may use charcoal tablets or capsules for gas and bloating you may also use Simethicone such as Gas-x, Mylicon or overseas Dsflatyl. The charcoal tablets can be purchased the most health food stores. You may resume your daily medication as prescribed by your physician.
