The
Gallup Poll estimates that up to
40% of the USA population suffers heartburn at least once a
month. Heartburn is the main
symptom of Hiatal Hernia and
Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease
Syndrome (GERDS).
Of the patients seeking medical
help, 10-20% have complications:
Esophageal Ulcers, Esophagitis,
Stricture with Dysphagia i.e.
difficulty swallowing, LPR
Syndrome of hoarse voice with
recurrent and chronic sore throat,
Aspiration Pneumonia and Asthmatic
Bronchitis, Anemia from chronic
bleeding of the esophagus and
upper stomach and last but not
least the precancerous condition
of Barrett Esophagus. Until
recently Barrett Esophagus, which is
the creeping of stomach lining
into the esophagus, was considered
a minor threat. However, in the New England
Journal of Medicine, dated March 19, 1999 summarized a day earlier on March
18, 1999 in USA Today, stated “people who suffered heartburn
or regurgitated at least once a
week were nearly eight times more
likely than others to develop
esophageal adenocarcinoma
(cancer). They were twice as
likely to develop stomach cancer
”. It went on to say that
medical “treatment for heartburn
or regurgitation didn’t reduce
the risk of esophageal cancer.”
The article went on to say that
“Esophageal cancer is the
eighth-most-common cancer
worldwide” and “They recommend
people with severe heartburn be
treated to heal their esophagus,
not just to relieve their symptoms”
Esophageal adenocarcinoma is known
to be the most rapidly increasing
cancer in the USA. Learn more...
