Asthmatic
bronchitis occurs as a result of
reflux disease. Minute amounts of
bile or acid can trickle into the
trachea triggering the asthmatic
attacks. There is, however, evidence
that these attacks can by
precipitated by the mere presence
of gastric juice in the esophagus.
Furthermore, more than 50% of
asthmatic bronchitis patients also
suffer from reflux. In these
patients the reduction of
asthmatic bronchitis attacks, both
in frequency and severity, after
successful laparoscopic surgery
for GERDS
is extremely gratifying. Pneumonia
and chronic lung infections can
occur from the aspiration of
gastric juice into the lungs,
particularly during sleep and
massive aspiration can cause
drowning and death in some
patients. All the above pulmonary complications, Barrett esophagus and increased risk of cancer can occur even if medical treatment is successful in eliminating the symptom of heartburn without curing the underlying reflux.
